AI Image Detection for Kim Jong Un Proof of Life
AI image detection flagged a fake hospital-bed photo and a fake Korean TV death announcement as AI-generated. Then North Korean state media released photos of Kim inspecting a small pink shoe.

AI detection for proof of life is not a use case no one predicted but here we are, detecting fake AI images of Kim Jong Un.
In March 2026, social media filled up with AI-generated pictures of Netanyahu lying dead in rubble, and another of him in a burial shroud. A deepfake TV presenter announced his death for good measure. Netanyahu then turned up in verified public appearances, showing all 5 fingers, which is an odd way to end a news cycle, but it's the only one available. They have to show they're alive, and AI image detection has to show the "evidence" was fake from the start.
Kim Jong Un has done this before, or it's been done to him before. In 2020 he dropped out of public view for weeks and the death rumors took off. He reappeared at a fertilizer plant on May 1. The fake "body" images from that round had been doctored from photos of Kim Jong Il, which at least took some effort. It's October 2026, Kim is the rumor again, and the fakes are AI-generated now.
This week, Wanjun Xie, a US-based Chinese dissident, said on X that Kim Jong Un suffered a brain hemorrhage, was treated by doctors from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, was moved to Beijing and died, according to IBTimes UK. Two images circulated with the rumor, and AI image detection from AI or Not flagged both as AI-generated and deepfake.
One shows Kim in a hospital bed surrounded by Chinese medical staff. The other is a fake Korean Central Television broadcast announcing his death. Then North Korean state media published photos of Kim at a garment and footwear exhibition, where he was pictured looking at a small pink shoe.
Key Takeaways from the Kim Jong Un Death Rumor
- Xie's posts, dated October 18, said Kim "suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a coma." None of the claims came with medical records, identifiable witnesses or verifiable evidence, according to IBTimes UK and Newsweek.
- Both rumor images, the hospital bed and the fake Korean Central Television broadcast, came back AI-generated and deepfake in AI or Not's AI image detector.
- KCNA and Rodong Sinmun published photos of Kim at the 2026 National Garment and Footwear Exhibition in Pyongyang on October 20. KCNA says the visit was October 19.
- South Korean diplomatic and security officials told Yonhap they had heard nothing to support the reports, according to Newsweek.
- The sequence of fake body image, fake TV announcement and proof of life matches what happened with Netanyahu in March 2026.
Where the Kim Jong Un Death Rumor Started
Xie calls himself chairman of the China Democracy Party. His claims came in pieces over several days, and they kept getting bigger:
- Xie said Peking Union Medical College Hospital sent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular experts to North Korea on October 17.
- Next, he said, Kim was moved to Beijing, died, and was secretly sent back to North Korea.
- Then came the troops. By Xie's account, China put 9,000 of them in Pyongyang to back Kim Ju Ae, and Kim Yo Jong later took control.
- He also shared a purported notice from the PLA Northern Theater Command that opened: "In preparation for a potential civil war in North Korea...", according to UNILAD.
Rachel Minyoung Lee of the Stimson Center told Newsweek: "So far this rumor remains hearsay and unsubstantiated." She added that "state media have reported on Kim Jong Un making a public appearance as recently as October 19."
What AI Image Detection Found on the Kim Jong Un Fakes
AI or Not's AI image detector flagged both images as AI-generated and deepfake. The first shows Kim in a hospital bed, apparently unconscious and hooked up to a breathing tube, monitoring leads and a blood pressure cuff. Masked staff hover by the vital-sign monitors. A Chinese flag hangs behind them, next to a sign reading "Peking Union Medical College Hospital."

The second image is styled as a Korean Central Television broadcast. It has a presenter in a pink hanbok with a red lapel pin, seated in front of a black-and-white portrait of Kim ringed with white chrysanthemums, and a North Korean flag nearby. The lower third says 김정은이 사망하였습니다 ("Kim Jong Un has died"), and the network label says 조선중앙텔레비존, Korean Central Television.
AI image detection flagged this one as AI-generated and deepfake too. Both images were first tracked on October 20.

Kim Jong Un's Proof of Life Photos
On Tuesday, October 20, KCNA and Rodong Sinmun published photos of Kim at the exhibition in Pyongyang, per IBTimes UK and the Washington Times. His wife Ri Sol Ju and daughter Kim Ju Ae appear in them. In the pictures Kim inspects a small pink shoe, reaches for the sleeve of a woman's coat on a mannequin and gestures at officials.
KCNA said Kim "looked round the venue of the garment and footwear exhibition of the field of light industry." It put the exhibition at more than 70,700 garments and over 170,000 pairs of shoes. Pyongyang did not explicitly address the rumors, and the photos have not been independently authenticated.
Netanyahu Got the Same Treatment in March
This isn't the first time a controversial leader has been attacked with AI lies. In March 2026, AI-generated images of rubble and a shrouded body were paired with a deepfake TV presenter announcing that Benjamin Netanyahu was dead. Verified appearances followed.
Kim's rumor ran the same sequence. A fake body image came first, then a fake broadcast, then the man himself on camera. Only the set dressing changed, with a hospital bed in Beijing where the rubble used to be.
Checking for AI has become a part of our reality, but doing so for proof of life is a new phenomenon that is not going away.
